Besides watching the weather for frost dates and rain, we take into consideration the planetary hours, moon phases and location of the moon and sun in conjunction with the other planets and constellations. Although our plants would grow either way and our products would still be awesome, we want to ensure the best possible outcome. Root crops are usually planted on Earth days when the moon is passing through the constellations of Virgo, Taurus or Capricorn. Plants from which the leaf part will be harvested are usually planted on Water days when the moon is passing through Cancer, Pisces or Scorpio. Flowering plants are usually planted on days when the moon is passing through the Air/Light constellations of Gemini, Aquarius and Libra. Finally, fruiting plants are usually planted when the moon is passing through Leo, Aries or Sagittarius, the Fire constellations.
Although we do not plant using planetary hours, we produce our soaps, herbal blends, oils and teas based on planetary hours. A brief description of planetary hours is included below.
Each hour of the day is ruled by a planet which gives that hour specific energies.
Sun - rules consciousness, individuality, creativity, leadership and devotion.
Moon - rules subconscious, soul, memory, family life, traditions, emotions and imagination.
Mars - controls action, energy, initiative, competitions, sports and courage.
Saturn - rules order, structure, patience, obstacles, delay, government and elders.
Jupiter - controls luck, optimism, hope success, trust, confidence, law and religion.
Venus - rules love, joy, beauty, pleasure, charm, grace, taste sensuality, attraction and profit.
Mercury - controls communication, intellect, judgement, eloquence, dexterity, agility and cunning.
New Moon - the new moon is a time to set intentions, it is the beginning of a cycle.
Simply put plant crops that produce above ground products during a waxing moon and root crops during a waning moon. Waxing is when the moon is growing larger. Waning is when the moon is diminishing.
First Quarter Moon - From the new moon to the first quarter moon is good for leafy greens and most herbs. These are water based plants that do not require as much energy as flowering plants.
Full Moon - From the first quarter moon to the full moon is good for flowering plants and plants that produce fruits, like tomatoes, squash, and other fresh produce. The days right before a full moon is the best time to start seeds for quick germination.
Third Quarter Moon - from the full moon to the third quarter moon is a good time nourish the soil, apply mulch and weed. Take a little breather from planting.
Dark Moon - From the third quarter moon to the dark moon is a good time for flowering bulbs and root crops, such as carrots, beets, potatoes.
Traits of each of the planets.
Mars - influence strengthened by warmth, works on the nutritive value of plants via silica elements, affects color of flowers, useful when planting perennials and trees.
Mercury - influenced by rain supply, short rotation, affects annuals, works with the limestone nature in plants
